PeoplesBank | Holyoke, MA
The Challenge
PeoplesBank, a longstanding financial institution headquartered in Western Massachusetts, sought a new site that would consolidate older and less functional branches, while also reaffirming its commitment to preserve key parts of Holyoke’s architectural history. The site ultimately chosen had proven difficult to redevelop. It had struggled for years to survive, and failed to attract any new investment.
The ODG Approach
O’Connell Development Group, in collaboration with its affiliated company Western Builders, helped guide PeoplesBank to define, design and realize the historic revitalization and repurposing of the former Yankee Pedlar Inn into the Pedlar Banking Center.
The Result
The new banking center incorporated the historic Hildreth House, which was restored to its original Queen Anne style by removing many of the alterations and renovations that have occurred since the home’s construction in 1882. One 20th century touch that was retained and rebuilt, however, was the wraparound porch that was an iconic part of the Yankee Pedlar, along with many of the neighboring homes of the same period on Northampton Street. The interior of the Pedlar Banking Center building houses a community room, which is available to nonprofit organizations free of charge. A new addition to Hildreth House was added in the rear of the building to provide space for the bank lobby, teller counter, and support offices, as well as the drive-thru canopy.
